Music Monday: The Habanera

This past weekend I got a chance to go with a friend to see the Bands of America Championships. Her son is in the High School Marching Band and they were taking part in the competition. Being a former marching band geek, I love being on the other side and watching this.

I sat there and listened to these bands. These students were really good, and the show they put on would tell a story, all through their music and their marching steps. It was amazing. In fact, these kids were really, really good.

Now, as a person with somewhat of a musical background, I have always enjoyed a wide variety of music. When I had kids, I also tried to expose them to the different kinds of music as well. Classical music, even with no words, has the ability to tell a story that only your imagination can come up with. For that reason, I really love that genre.

My kids have also grown to love the stories that music can tell as well. When we first moved into our house last year, we set up my keyboard in hopes it would eventually become used instead of collecting dust in a closet. Well, without knowing how to play the piano, I would often catch them playing the songs on the keyboard and dancing to them.

For Music Monday, here is a video of my two youngest, Bella and Max, dancing to The Habanera!

What kind of songs do you play that really get your feet moving?

  2. First of all, your kids are sooo cute! I love your statements about music. I went to college at University of Michigan and the highlight of every football game is watching the marching band -- they are fantastic! Great post!

    1. I was a part of the band in High School and it seems to me that band students are a different make-up of people. The live and breath the band life. Which is evidence at how awesome these shows are. If you aren't a part of the band, it is hard to understand how much dedication goes into this. And they really are cool to see on the field during Football games. We did get to see the Riverside Community College band and colorguard perform and they were breath-taking. It was just wow!

    1. My daughter does too... sadly it is starting to get a little small and she is having a hard time getting rid of it. Luckily she still has a couple of months left! :)

  5. That is so cute! Her outfit is perfect for this! We have a keyboard sitting in our dining room that the kids will turn on and dance to the music the same way. Otherwise, ours too, would be collecting dust.

    1. Lucky for us, my daughters are both taking piano lessons right now. I am not gonna lie... I am a little jealous. I wish I would have learned to play the piano! But my son likes to play the songs still. It is a great way to keep it from collecting dust!

    1. Ha ha - that is my daughter for you. She was playing it up for the camera of course. I tried getting her to do some regular Youtube videos called Life According to Bella... well, she got bored with it and didn't really want to do it anymore! Bummer - it was super cute. But now that I started doing the Vlogs she is interested in doing it again. How fun is that?

  7. Wow, they are naturals! Especially Bella! You can tell that she can hear and feel the music. So awesome for them to have a big room like that to dance around in and go crazy. :)

    1. Sadly the room has gotten a little smaller since we actually filled it with furniture. It was kind of nice that they had a spot were they could run and play. Bella is so into all things music, she even wants to go on the show So You Think You Can Dance. However, she wants to partner up with me and said I need to learn to dance first! LOL

  10. Ohhhh, I am a former marching band geek, too, and I LOVED reading that. Marching bands make me feel so nostalgic, especially really good ones. I really miss that stage of life. Glad you got to watch one! I really hope my kids are in marching band someday...
