Last year I made witches brew with witches fingers! |
Halloween is usually one of my favorite holidays. We have spent countless years throwing killer parties and dressing up. It was fun coming up with cool costumes and exploring through all the scary decorations. My favorite part was all the crazy, creepy, gross recipes I would make every single year.
Well this year - I am not in the mood. I didn't even put out a single decoration. I waited until the last minute to get my kids costumes and the only reason I have a costume is because my husband kind of insisted. My husband on the other hand, well he went all out.
The decorations - well that is just a shame. You see we have boxes upon boxes of decorations because of all the parties we have thrown. These aren't just small decorations either. They are floating heads in balls and zombies that tear off their heads and dead zombie pirates in cages. There are also a few traditional ones like cobwebs and little ceramic pumpkins. But we have never been known to do anything simple. When we do something... we go all out! This year, we didn't even make it to the pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins which means we also didn't get a chance to carve the pumpkins either. So much for decorations!
Today I am married to Sookie Stackhouse! |
The kids costumes still turned out cute. However, we went late. Nice for the wallets, not so nice if you are picky about what you wanted to be. Luckily, my kids are still young enough that they don't care. And this is still easier than trying to come up with my own costume idea. Some of those end up costing just as much. And the make-up I have to do this year, is minimal. (With the exception of my husband!) Like I said, he goes all out. Last night he spent the better part of an hour shaving his legs and his armpits. He also shaved off his goatee that he has been sporting for just about 3 years. I have never seen a female so unattractive! But I give him props, because there probably isn't too many men secure enough to actually go as Sookie Stackhouse from the True Blood series. I hope he wins first place at work today. If anything - he deserves the win purely for going all out. Not to mention - it is funny!
Overall, today just seems like any other day, just busier than usual. Without all the Halloween decorations up - I just don't seem to be in the mood. I took my son to Storytime and they were all dressed up and they read Halloween themed books and even did trick or treating. I plan on leaving shortly after I get my girls from school to do something Halloween like at the mall. But mostly, I am really just hiding from the Trick or Treaters. Why?
Because I am the witch without the candy.
That is right, not only am I all bah-humbug about the holiday, but I am being selfish. I am all about the take and not about the give today... well at least when it comes to the candy. Let me explain myself? My kids are young yet and my husband and I take them out trick or treating. We don't designate one person or the other to stay home and hand out candy. We go out trick or treating as a family. I want to see my kids experience it and so does he... although I bet he actually enjoys showing off his costume! Therefore, because we take our kids out trick or treating and we aren't home, we don't invest in the candy.
When we come back, we will use some of the candy from our kids trick or treating to hand out to other kids that straggle behind. But mostly, we have candy for months and months after the holiday. I just can't see spending money on more candy that could eventually end up in the garbage.
So obviously I am not in the Holiday spirit this year. I wonder what that means for Christmas. Since we aren't even gonna be home, I am already thinking it isn't worth it to put up all the decorations. Oh well, I guess I will start thinking about that tomorrow - after Halloween!
I'm literally sitting at the mall on Halloween night reading this. Lol! I'm a witch without the candy too.
ReplyDeleteYeah - I am not alone! :)
DeleteWell...let's see...lol...I don't have kids and we went out on Saturday to a concert in honor of Halloween. Given that we live way out, we haven't decorated in years. I suppose when we have kids we might move closer in and get in on the holiday action, but for now, I kind of like the peace and quiet. That probably sounds bad, but I sort of just don't feel it...and if I did, I could drive 30 miles to the city and partake. :)
ReplyDeleteNow that sounds like the perfect setting... Maybe that is what I need to do... move into the middle of nowhere! Oh wait - I have kids so I would end up with the 30 mile drive to partake in the activities! :)
DeleteI am so not in the Halloween spirit either...but I'm not one to talk...cause I'm not a big Halloweener anyway. :P
ReplyDeleteI am actually more a Christmas person. My husband is all about Halloween. But if I appease him with joy for Halloween he returns the favor for Christmas. Just this year... No chance of getting into the mood!
DeleteCast my vote for 'Halloween? boo humbug'
ReplyDeleteNever been much into this particular holiday, possibly because since we have always had an 'only dog' (as opposed to human children), it has been easy to not feel bad about not wanting to join in the festivities, especially as none of our dogs have been overly fond of the idea of groups of humans, wearing disguises and making noise, appearing to be trying to get into our house! lol ("...yes children! Ola will now do her famous impersonation of a rabid dog! wait! you haven't gotten the treat yet!")
I have enjoyed reading this Post
I can see how that would definitely damper the spirit and mood for Halloween. I know several people yesterday that had to take drastic measures because they had dogs. The last time they didn't the dogs tore up the house from all the kids lurking around! I guess for that case I am glad I don't have dogs! Especially now that my kids can pick up after themselves! :)
DeleteI completely understand how you feel! I'm never really into Halloween, but the kids are. My husband took them out this year because it's too cold for me to trek around and not get cranky. I like your husband's costume! It's clear he has a good sense of humor. :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband goes all out for Halloween. But at least after yesterday he understands a little how it feels to be a woman. Ha ha... but yeah - I am totally killing the spirit of the holidays this year. Must be something in the air! :)
DeleteI loved this and can understand. We too Trick-or-Treat as a family and can see your point. This year having no power and heat, i felt your pain even more so. Rant on and loved just getting to read your blog again finally. Missed all of you just a bit of normalcy here was so nice :) :)
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see you back. I can only imagine how the storm caused lots of havoc for Halloween. My husband would have been furious. Glad you guys are safe and your back in action! :)
DeleteHaha - Sookie Stackhouse...that's original, he should definitely win! What on earth did you put in that dessert if I may ask? It looks disgusting!! Lol.
ReplyDeleteSadly my husband didn't win the costume contest... however he did get several numbers from guys hoping to meet up later ;)
DeleteThe dessert is brownies with jello worms. They taste really good and it looks awesome. No one would eat it because they were afraid! :)
It's not just you, Stacy! Even Collin wasn't really into it this year. Must be something in the air. I hope it gets better towards Christmas, tho! Love hubby's costume. Please let us know if he won! :)
ReplyDeleteIt must definitely be something in the air. Sadly my husband didn't win. He lost to a guy that had big buff muscles wearing no shirt. What can I say.. the whole company voted and it was mostly females in the company. I think he should have won... maybe next year! :)
DeleteStacy, no reason to worry about Christmas this year. The Mayans have already handled that for us! My wife went to the dollar store and bought two bags of candy. This is the first year we haven't had the first visitor. Now, we're stuck, or I should say, she's stuck with eating two bags of candy since I don't eat it. Such is life. Hope your hubby won 1st. For all he did, he deserved it.
ReplyDeleteI told my husband I wasn't buying any presents until after the end of the world. He thinks I am being ridiculous! LOL But hey - at least we didn't go ahead and get the candy so we had to eat it all by ourselves. I hope your wife got the good stuff.
DeleteOh and sadly, my husband did not win! :(
The Halloween spirit evaded me this year too. I just could not seem to get my act together for pumpkin carving and costume creation. I figure there's always next year.
ReplyDeleteYour husband definitely deserves first place! I hope he won!
Thank goodness there is always next year! Now I have a year to get into the mood for it! :)And my husband has a year to think of another costume since he didn't win! Bummer!
DeleteI'm the oldest of my four siblings, so by the time my mom was on her third kid, she just stopped caring about Halloween entirely. She used to turn off all of the lights and go to the movies. So you're not quite as bah-humbug as you might think. :) Great post!
